Buffalo Bills NFL Gambling Odds & 2015 Handicapping Preview

2015 Buffalo Predictions

The Buffalo Bills posted a respectable 9-7 record in 2014, finishing as the runners up in the AFC East to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

If the Bills want to finally get over the hump and compete for a division title and a long awaited playoff berth they’re going to need a fast start to the season. The Patriots will be without QB Tom Brady for the first four games of the season, which could leave the door wide open for the Bills to get an early lead and force the Pats to play catch up.

NFL Handicapping Insight

Buffalo Bills (Team Link)
2014 Record: 9-7
Bills Odds to win the 2015 AFC Conference: 17/1
Bills Odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl: 35/1

Let’s take a look at the numbers:

The Bills enter this season with a lot of question marks as there have been some major changes at key positions. Starting with the head coaching role, as Doug Marrone exercised his option and skipped town, only to be replaced by former Jets head coach Rex Ryan.

Ryan’s reputation is well documented; his teams generally play a hard nosed brand of defense and pound the ball on the ground on offense. Ryan has been gifted a very talented and deep defensive core and the Bills may just have one of the best defenses in the entire NFL this season.

Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes line up as the outside linebackers in Ryan’s favoured 3-4 set and they will be a nightmare for opposition QB’s this season. The two racked up a combined 24 sacks a season ago. The D-line is stacked as well with Pro Bowl nose tackle Kyle Williams, who will be flanked by another Pro Bowl talent in Marcell Dareus on the end.

Tough to run against right? Throwing the ball won’t be any easier as this Bills squad has talent throughout the secondary. Stephon Gilmore and Leodis McKelvin figure to line up at the corners and Aaron Williams should be a lock at free safety.

The defense is ridiculously tough and barring some major injuries this team will be in a lot of close games. The question is, can their offense score enough points to get them wins?

Quarterback seems to be a bit of mystery and it will likely come down to whoever performs best out of camp. Matt Cassell joined the team this offseason and figures to be the front runner at the moment, though EJ Manuel will push him for a job that he’s had every opportunity to claim as his own but just hasn’t proven that he can do it as yet.

Even if the QB situation is “shady” the running back situation seems locked up with the addition of LeSean McCoy. The former Eagles back has run for over 1,000 yards four times in six NFL seasons and is one of the most exciting and dynamic backs in the game. At wide-out the Bills will have Sammy Watkins back from an outstanding rookie campaign, along with Robert Woods and Percy Harvin. The latter is really a big X-factor as he has the ability to be a game breaker but has a habit of wearing out his welcome and a reputation for being a problem child in the locker room.

Bills Betting Outlook:

This team shapes up eerily similar to last year’s Cleveland Browns. The defense is stellar and will keep them in a lot of games. But as you saw a year ago with the Browns, some shaky QB play at key times was their eventual undoing. The Bills seem pretty set at everywhere but the Quarterback position, which is the most important position on the field.

Cassell or Manuel likely won’t be tasked with putting the team on their shoulders and winning many games, and if the Bills’ defense can score points then Buffalo can lean on McCoy to eat up clock and beat teams into submission.

At 17/1 odds to win the AFC they’re a tough team to get behind as the offense just seems to be missing something (cough* QB… cough*). The Bills can make a push to be a playoff team, I really believe that, and a 10-6 season is not out of their reach, but come playoff time when you’re going to inevitably have to match up with high octane offenses like New England, Denver and Indianapolis I just don’t think the Bills will be able to keep pace.
